New York, NY – One of my beliefs as a writer is that you’ll improve not only by spending time at your actual craft i.e. writing but you’ll be better served by checking out what other people write. There is no better inspiration than a witty turn of phrase by another writer. I imagine it’s like being Jay-Z in the studio…if you hear incredible verses by other rappers its makes you want to step your game up. So last week I was checking out one of the better blogs out there Very Smart Brothas and specifically their post highlighting “5 movies that aren’t as funny as you swear they are”.
Entertaining reading but nothing really jumped out at me until I got down to #4 (spoiler alert) which was a crossed out Love Jones. Now of course Love Jones is not a comedy which was the punch line…it was included in this list then “crossed out” with the explanation that “though not a comedy it was WAY overrated”. Now this had me puzzled since among my closest friends Love Jones is considered one of the best African American films ever. I have always been willing to take it one step further and proclaim it one of the best films ever made…regardless of any measurement. So with an opinion like that it was obvious I couldn’t let it sit that Love Jones could be considered in any way, shape or form to be overrated. So this piece is more a celebration of Love Jones than a rebuttal of any other opinion. Quite simply put, Love Jones is the greatest of all time and here is why in three simple reasons.

Reason # 1 – Love Jones was the brainchild of writer/director Theodore Witcher. He created his opus in 1997 and promptly disappeared. I have often thought 20 years from now he would resurface akin to Sean Connery’s character in “Finding Forrester” a disheveled bearded recluse to explain why he disappeared after creating just one signature film but I digress. Love Jones was a clear line in the sand away from various “gangster/hood” films that were dominating Black Hollywood at the time. Additionally it launched a new genre of urban romantic films that tried to duplicate its success (Love & Basketball, Best Man, Brown Sugar, etc) all with limited success. So in that respect Love Jones picked up where 70’s films like Mahogany and Lady Sings the Blues left off but with a new sensibility and voice that spoke to a very specific experience.

Reason # 2 – Love Jones was genius in its portrayal of a slice of life involving real characters. The movie works so well because the people reflected on screen were in many ways just like us. There were no caricatures, no stereotypes of how men and women are “supposed to behave”, no madcap scenarios so popular in the romantic comedy genre. Instead its genius was in it’s subtly. The ordinary-ness of the characters in the end was what makes them so special and endearing. Life is filled with big moments but we don’t often recognize them as such until they have passed and there is hindsight to give us wisdom. This movie was filled with those real life moments: first date, truths withheld, and prideful decisions, on and on. All the moments that tied together become very big. But when represented on screen those moments were handled expertly by the talent in front of the camera (Nia Long/Larenz Tate) as well as behind (Theodore Witcher).

Reason #3 – Love Jones made you believe in what you were seeing. The writing/direction led by a subtle hand that pushes it in the right direction. The aforementioned great talents of Nia Long & Larenz Tate as the principal characters give us the perfect amount of chemistry. By the time you walk away from the film and the credits are rolling you were totally immersed in those lives on screen. You related and you believed. Films can make us feel many things: joy, fear, outrage, thrilled, sad, angry…the list goes on and on. How many times have we left a film and believed what we just saw? You walk out with that idea planted in your head…yeah I bought that for two hours…no suspension of belief necessary. Factor in what a rare feat that is and you start to appreciate how truly amazing and ahead of its time Love Jones was. It’s been thirteen years and counting and we haven’t seen anything come close yet. That has to say something…

So in the end you might disagree with me. You might have another favorite movie or simply might not rank Love Jones that high. But I urge you to take another look. Pop it in the DVD….let that black and white photo montage pull you in as the opening credits roll. By the time you’re watching the final rain drenched scene I dare you to tell me you didn’t believe…

NEW YORK, NY – Alarm clocks are often shrill, loud and discordant. They have several wake up options but I have yet to encounter any that I would describe as pleasant. From the high pitched beep to the steady buzz even random music it is all designed to do the same thing…wake us from slumber. What’s so amazing about the concept of the wake up call is that as meticulous as we are about setting them to rouse us from sleep we don’t pay attention to the same wake up calls in our relationships. The wake up call in our relationship is the constant ringing of behavior that just doesn’t change despite how much you might want it to. Now follow me here. All of us enter into our relationships as fully formed people with our share of expectations, wants, desires, faults, weaknesses, frailties, etc. In short, we all naturally constructed to be perfectly imperfect. Being that we are imperfect, it is an annoying trait of human nature to try to change another person’s behavior. The intent does not have to be insidious but we all do it. “I wish she was a little neater…if only I can get her to make the bed”. “Man, why is he always late…he told me 300pm and its 315pm”. They can be small enough that we learn to live with these quirks. At other times, these traits are more significant and become a challenge to whether our relationship will survive. That is where problems can begin to arise.

Now for the record, I am of the belief that you can’t really change people’s behavior. They are who they are and they were that way before you met them. It is highly dubious that you’ll be able to change them. You can tweak, mold a bit through compromise, but outright change is doubtful to damn near impossible. Failures to accept that means we are failing to hear the persistent wake up call of behavior we do not like. Instead, we hit the snooze button thinking that we can work on it more later…we just need five more minutes of sleep. Unfortunately hitting that snooze button in relationships is more like five more months than it is five minutes. We would rather sleep through what we know…that this might not be the right fit…than heed the alarm and wake up to the situation and deal with it accordingly. Those alarms are there for a reason. The beginning of the day might be a little painful and we’re more than slightly groggy but we’re always better off heeding that wake up call. Dreams and fantasies are terrific but our relationships don’t exist within them. They exist in the waking world…one that comes with calls that might be shrill…might be unwelcome…but are incredibly valuable…when we choose to listen.

“If what they say is “Nothing is forever”
Then what makes, Then what makes, Then what makes
Then what makes, Then what makes love the exception?”

Hey Ya – Andre 3000

NEW YORK, NY – Recently I had the pleasure of spending a portion of my afternoon with a good friend talking over a glass of tea. Now I am no tea aficionado but I have to say it was completely engaging. Our conversation continued to flow with each pour and although the therapeutic effects of tea took a while to take hold I felt thoroughly relaxed. Beyond the convo and tea itself I was struck by the Tea Sand Timer. If you’re not familiar (as I wasn’t) it’s a simple block of hourglass-esque sand timers set to different lengths – 3min, 5min, 7min, etc. It allows you to time exactly how long you want your tea to soak as all teas are different and have an “optimal time”. This block of timers was simple in its form and function and I loved it.

Only later did I start reflecting on the value of time and its place in relationships. It seems like there is a heightened sensitivity to matters of the heart lately. Everything I read, watch or listen to involves relationships or love. Either we have too much of it or not enough. Either way the noise is deafening. Which made me ask…what is the hoopla about? Why the constant analysis and evaluation of all things love related? That din is at its loudest when our relationships are nearing or at an end. Breakups are rarely mutual. Usually one person wants out and the other person wants to make it work. Breakups also do not have to be consensual. I do not need your permission to end our relationship. If one person doesn’t want to do it anymore then guess what…the relationship is over. It might take one conversation (first breakups rarely stick) or it might take twenty. But one way or another if someone wants out bad enough it’s going to happen.

This brings me to the Tea Sand Timer and artist Andre 3000. Most of the angst that results in the death of a relationship is largely the result of the idea that love “lasts forever”. People will even emphasize and make the distinction between mere love and true love. Because you know “true love” lasts forever…that thing you just waded through for X amount of time…that was just regular old love. Why? Because it didn’t last. This of course is bullshit. Nothing lasts forever…and love is no exception. Please do not wring your hands and shake your fist to the heavens. This is not a bad thing. Remember the Tea Sand Timer. The time that it measures is the same for relationships. Some last 1 year, others 10 years. A great relationship can be only a few months or it can last a lifetime. Every so often someone’s Tea Sand Timer has an infinity sign next to it but let’s face it, that’s rare. On the flipside that rarity makes it all the more precious. Instead of lamenting the end of a relationship why not rejoice in the time that was spent together? It doesn’t need to be forever to have been meaningful, and beautiful and memorable. Your heart can be touched forever in just a moment. It’s finding the magic in those moments however long they last that makes the difference. So turn over those timers in your life and enjoy each grain of sand. There is no telling when they will run out and that’s why they’re so valuable.

NEW YORK, NY – You know it when you know it. That simple phrase is the adage of the romantic. You know it when you know it. You look across a room and in that moment your eyes fall on the person that you’ve been looking for all your life. Refracted light carries that image to your retina which is processed in a mere few trillionths of a second but with repercussions that can last a lifetime. The quintessential “blink of an eye”. Your heart beats faster. Your pulse quickens. These are physical responses that confirm what your eyes have already signaled. The ground rushes up to meet you. 9.8m per second squared. Don’t be alarmed…you’re falling in love.

It is overwhelming and disconcerting. Seven days a week, twenty four hours a day. We don’t believe in fractional relationships. You are two whole numbers that when added create a larger sum. You deal in absolutes. It is 100% or nothing at all. You smirk when you hear others remark that they “give 120%” or some other arbitrary number. No such thing…nothing is more than a whole number. They are being obtuse but that’s okay, so you ignore it and roll on in your bliss. Nothing can permeate your circles. You both find solace in your overlapping lines. You are most comfortable living in the “C”. It’s a simple equation after all. 1+1 = 2. It’s a mathematical certainty. If only all of our relationships can be so tidy. But alas we’re not simple mathematics as much as we’d like to be. I exist as a function and so do you. The very nature of you and I is a derivative and we are constantly changing as our inputs change. Over time and over distance we rise and fall as we graph our function. So we begin in the simple but we evolve as the derivative. We are linked and I depend on your function and you depend on mine. The numbers are all around us we only have to take the time to solve the equation.

New York, NY – Even as I type this I am aware that I am run the risk of dating myself but hey here goes nothing. When I was in those formative pre-teen/teen years we had a special term if you were interested in or dating someone. You didn’t say the person was your boyfriend or girlfriend you merely said “you were talking to them”. It was vague but not intentionally so. I am not sure how or why that became the turn of phrase but I remember it clearly. “Hey man what’s up with you and Jane? Are you talking?” You in turn would nod; grinning “Yeah man I’m talking to her”. That was it. That simple exchange told you everything you needed to know. We were younger then. Everything was simple. When you broke up the reverse was true. You just weren’t “talking” anymore. Now I am older. Everything is less simple. Now we’re not “talking to” one another anymore. We’ve replaced it with “talking at” one another. We say more. The words come faster, harder now. Supposedly filled with more meaning but I wonder about that. I think we just talk at each other more because it’s easier. We drive each other to distraction with words. Easier isn’t the same as simpler. Simple implies I am getting to the base of something. Breaking it down to it’s base elements. Easy? Well easy sounds lazy to me. I think we should all try to be a little less easy. Let’s strive to be simple. Let’s “talk to” each other again. Sade has a new song “Soldier of Love”. I like that song. It’s Sade after all…what’s not to like? Her voice and music blend perfectly to conjure images of deep longing and affection. You see yourself going off to battle in the name of love. That image is powerful and romantic and has its appeal but on the other hand I can see the one sidedness of it. Soldiers by definition are marching into battle to enforce a particular way of thinking. Soldiers don’t negotiate. I think I would rather be a missionary of love. Missionaries have a point of view and a belief system but they lead with talking. Missionaries extend a hand and they open to you. It comes from the deep rooted simple belief that they have something to share with you. Something that is important and sacred. So it’s Valentines Day…now all we need are the missionaries.

Recently a good friend shared a story about a woman that he briefly dated, and how she decided to inform him that he made her feel “like a total fucking prostitute” after he ended things. Why you ask? Did he call her out of her name? No. Was he disrespectful in anyway? No. Did, he pay her for sexual favors? No. Did he ever use the phrase “whoop that trick” during any of their encounters? Doubt it (although in the right moment that song could be useful). So what caused such a reaction? Could it be that he merely acted as a willing and able participant in a few mutually consensual sexual encounters during their brief relationship? The same encounters that she was more than eager to participate in and initiate. However, after those encounters and a few further conversations, he was able to determine she wasn’t the woman that he was seeking and very politely and with all due respect, informed her that he no longer wanted to sleep with her although he would like to remain friends.

continues after the jump…

Apparently, by her response, it is unprecedented that a man, after being granted the “keys to the kingdom” (at least that’s what some women think) can remain disinterested, even to the point that he turns down future sexual encounters. And thus she decided to play the guilt card, blaming him for for having sex with her. You know the roll – the virtuous woman lured into bed by the sex hungry man-beast. In every way, she was the one that pushed their relationship to the sexual brink. He just planted the flag. My question is, why is it incumbent for men to have the crystal ball, peer into the future and thus stop, in the present, sexual encounters that result in nothing more than an intimate moment between two people and not a lifetime commitment? News flash – that will NEVER happen.

This story is evidence of a larger issue as to why men and women still have issues dealing with one another on an basic and fundamentally honest level. Let me make it plain for you that still don’t get it. Any late 20’s/30’s/40’s man that’s worth anything has had more than his fair share of sexual experiences. At least enough to not be swayed by the experience itself. Essentially, the curtain has long been pulled back on the vagina Wizard, hence it’s not this life changing experience that most women think it is…at least not for us. As a result, women have to do a lot more than “give it up” to keep any guy worth having. Sure, sex is a key part of any solid relationship, but far from the primary component. Our attraction starts much earlier. Most of the time, we’ve determined if a woman is or isn’t a viable relationship option long before she knows we even exist. Yes, we can do that. It’s one of our few super powers. Additionally, we know if they aren’t a viable long-term option, but someone that we will still sleep with, if the opportunity presents itself. That little detail, you can set your clock to. However, if women continue to use sex as a tool to land guys that they want, but the guy doesn’t show the same interest in return, the woman shouldn’t be surprised if his feelings remain unchanged even after the two have slept together. Often in this case, the guys feelings might even diminish further. That’s my “prenutual/postnutual” theory that I’ll expound upon in a later post. (Please remind me).

Guys are like venus fly traps in that sense. Of course we’re going to accept sexual offers that land in our lap, assuming she doesn’t look like C.H.U.D. That’s just how we’re wired. You know that. We know that. Get over it. But a word to the wise, if you’re looking for something serious, you don’t want the passive hunter. If he shows little-to-no interest, guess what…he’s not interested. Sex isn’t going to change that, no matter how “bomb” you think yours is. I’m not saying that we don’t appreciate sex as much as you do. Believe me when I say, we do. We just place emotional value in other elements of a relationship that women might not. For instance, I almost fell in love with a woman once, because she could explain, in detail, the Miami Dolphin’s wildcat offense. That blew my mind! But I digress. It’s simple. Women – you want and a guy that wants you more than you want him. Let me repeat that:

You. Want. A. Guy. That. Wants. You. More. Than. You. Want. Him.

Simple concept, but seemingly much harder to execute. But it is achievable. You’ll know it when you see it. Or better yet, you’ll feel it. He may not always be the perfect vision of Prince Charming (see: Jay-Z and Beyonce) but he is still an awesome fucking guy that could make you happy as hell! Motivation and Desire are the X and Y of this equation. You want the guy that continually feels the need to impress you. Continually marvels at the concept of you and him, together. The guy that will go to war for you. Not the guy that will dodge the draft, and head for the hills. Him…you let go. Don’t play the guilt card after using sex as bait to get a guy that was luke warm on you from the start. Matter of fact, don’t use sex as bait at all, it rarely ever works out the way you might want. If you want to sleep with a guy, sleep with him. But don’t expect something to be there afterward that wasn’t there before. If that’s your motivation, keep the diamonds in your pants, no matter how shiny you think they are.

NEW YORK, NY – Since the Tiger Woods story hit the public has been inundated with details, speculation, rumors and opinion as to where this leaves Tiger. When the story first broke my reaction was two fold: a. I hope Tiger is ready for the start of the PGA season and b. who would be surprised by the revelation that Tiger was unfaithful to his wife? Clearly I underestimated the naiveté of the public as the sharks started circling to tear apart the world’s best golfer. The cries of outrage, shock and disappointment were loud and anguished. So, the FREE man had to take a step back and check out all of these reactions and process the information.

continued after the jump…

In the end, I walk away with the realization that people are uncomfortable with anything that threatens the standard concepts of monogamy and current structure or marriage. What could have been an interesting moment to examine the realistic nature of these institutions has been lost amongst salacious details about text messages, voice mails and six irons. On some level that’s all we can expect because of the disingenuous nature of Tiger’s critics. All the high minded columnist, talking heads, and celebrity “reporters” who make their existence by leeching off the talents of others.

So let’s dispel some myths. If you put any athlete, celebrity, artist, politician, etc. on some moral high ground based strictly on how you perceive their lives to be, you’re an idiot. Tiger Woods is a golfer. All I need him to do is put his foot in the ass of all the other golfers on the PGA tour and win tournaments. On the flipside, Eliot Spitzer’s only responsibility to me was to be an effective Governor for New York State; the fact that he was “client #9” is irrelevant. It only becomes relevant if his private taste for hookers involved government money…if not…then who cares? And don’t talk to me about it being illegal. So is being naked in your own home in some states. Point is, we have to separate people’s private lives from their public persona.

I have news for all you outraged people out there…if you knew what folks at your 9 to 5 were doing – your manager, mentor, CEO – you might be shocked and appalled as well. The real fascinating story would be if Tiger wasn’t sleeping with other women. Please let me know how the hell you managed to be the world’s most successful, recognized, wealthiest athlete and stay faithful to one woman – baring a magic genie or glass slipper. That’s the story I want to read because it is quite an imaginative tale.

Tiger is living a personal life that’s no different, when you pull away the hypocrisy and bullshit, from most people. Divorce rates are sky high and it’s not because someone left the cap off the toothpaste. Of course women are shocked/disappointed/shaken to the core at these revelations. Please stop. Really…stop. Men “cheat”. Women “cheat”. We’re human beings and for the most part, it’s part of the human condition. You can act shocked, but I’m quite sure you don’t want anyone going through your text records. And I’m willing to guess you don’t have a world famous golfer among your contacts…just some random mofo selling you dreams. I also don’t want to hear about how beautiful his wife is and how embarrassed she must feel. Marrying Tiger Woods was like hitting the mega millions lottery so I am not worried about her in the least. Trust me she’ll get over it, assuming any of this is a surprise to her in the first place, which I doubt. She might be blond but she’s not dumb.

Tiger is an athlete…an accomplished one without doubt…but still an athlete . We should expect nothing more from him than to win. We would all be better served if we checked the self righteousness at the door and spent more time looking inward. The FREE Man’s perspective of him has not changed one iota…he’s still the world’s greatest golfer and the only reason I watch the sport at all. He shouldn’t listen to all the assholes telling him to go on 60 minutes, Oprah or any other sob fest. He should simply do the one thing he didn’t do via text and voice mail. Stay silent and handle his business internally. He doesn’t owe any of us anything. I’ll see you all at the Masters. I know you’ll be watching knowing all he has to do to make this all go away…is win.

The entertainment business is filled with trends. Some, like the advent of social media and the proliferation of free digital content are relevant. While others, like silly iPhone apps for every curiosity are irrelevant. And one is just annoying as hell….everyone is a DJ. I am sure readers out there can relate to what I am saying. Search among your friends and I am sure you can pick out one or two of them that are now “spinning” some where. DJing is the new guest bartending…everyone feels they can do it. But sadly, just the opposite is true. Not everyone can be a great DJ and simply owning a laptop and Serrato does not make you Jazzy Jeff or Kid Capri. At least, when your friend guest bartends they have the ability with enough drinks to get you fucked up. No such luck with the suck ass amateur DJ they just ruin your night and kill your buzz with their poor song selection and shady mixing. So keeping this in mind, it’s our privilege to highlight a REAL DJ in every sense of the word. Hailing from LA, DJ Vice not only grew up in the music scene he flourished in it using his love of hip hop and DJing to create a life where he is doing exactly what he wants to do. For DJ Vice this isn’t a hobby, this isn’t work…it’s a labor of love and we wanted to find out more about his background, his current projects and what’s next…

FREE Mag: Let’s start at the beginning. What got you interested in becoming a DJ?

DJ Vice: That’s pretty easy to remember. I was 13 years old and I remember going to a wedding. It was a very international environment and what really grabbed me was watching how the DJ controlled the entire room by the music he was playing. It was the mood that he set even if I didn’t know all the music. For a kid like me I had never seen anything like that. It was like seeing someone like a Jordan for the first time and knowing that was something you wanted to do yourself. I was hooked and I knew I had found what I wanted to do and the world I wanted to be around.

FREE Mag: With that in mind, what happened next to move things forward?

DJ Vice: Well I was still very young. I knew what I wanted but the next steps were a little unclear..at least until I met DJ Splice who was another local DJ but older and obviously already in the game. I was willing to do anything…carry crates, whatever just to be around and soak it all up. He got me my first turntables and mixers and I was off at that moment.

FREE Mag: Did you start getting gigs right away?

DJ Vice: I wouldn’t say right away. What was important was actually learning the skills of DJing. I had to learn to scratch, to mix, I had to get records. I would spend all my money on getting vinyl and building up my music. I loved it…hip hop was my music and it opened my world. I would listen to KDAY which was the first mix show out here in LA all the time…like I said it opened my world to what was out there musically…

FREE Mag: How so? Explain that a little…

DJ Vice: I was a kid growing up in LA. That experience is all that I knew. By listening to hip hop from the east coast…Special Ed, Doug E. Fresh, etc I was better able to understand the experiences of people who lived in a whole other part of the country than I did. Of course, I loved all the west coast stuff as well…N.W.A, Ice Cube, but there wasn’t the regional kind of stuff that came into hip hop later. Back then it was all about the music and experiencing that kind of stuff. I remember playing songs over and over just so I can get the lyrics and really understand the meaning of it. A track like “Self Destruction” is a perfect example. I learned a lifestyle through those songs…

FREE Mag: So you’re honing your skills at this point?

DJ Vice: Of course, this was everything to me. So I am out spinning all the time…mostly high school parties, weddings, I would so any gig really. I figured that was the best way to build my reputation and to just get better. Because I never wanted to do anything else I didn’t have other options in my eyes…of course I did the school thing but I never thought I would end up down that road. I worked hard at DJing and that led to me working with the Baka Boyz and eventually getting a radio gig.

FREE Mag: How is radio different?

DJ Vice: Being on the radio for me was great because now I am known a lot more. I have my slot and I can do my thing. In those days, it wasn’t like now where the songs that are played are more narrow. Back then you can bring your own style to things from a music perspective. Of course, there are always politics and things like that but it wasn’t the same machine as it is now. I couldn’t be confined to the radio thing in today’s format. What to play. When to play it. How many spins. That’s not me. I started off with this being what I love to do and when it becomes just a business I know that’s when it’s time for me to do something else. But radio was a huge opportunity for me. It allowed me to build my own brand and meet so many people in the industry. It got to the point where you’re going into the studio with rappers..watching them work on their records and they’re asking what you think. They know you have your ear to the street and might have something to contribute..that’s an indescribable feeling from where I was coming from…

FREE Mag: How would you describe your connection to DJing?

DJ Vice: To me DJing is an art form. It’s like you’re painting a picture and the music is all the colors. I have to not only play key records or popular songs I have to play them at the right time. I need to pull together classics and mix them with hits. With the internet, Itunes, downloads all DJ’s have access to the same music. You have to find something that is going to make you different. Nowadays, especially in the big clubs a lot of guests don’t know the history of the music. I think that’s where I can do something different…

FREE Mag: What is some advice you would give for those looking to pursue an opportunity as a DJ?

DJ Vice: I would tell anyone that wants to get into this game that there are some basic things you should do if you’re serious. Get a really strong management team. I’ve been blessed with a really strong manager since I got into DJing. You have to trademark your name..that is critical. Beyond that really take some time to know your craft and get your skills sharp. So many people think they can just jump into this and it’s not that easy at all. You don’t get a lot of chances to impress people and if you get in front of someone and your skills are lacking you probably won’t get another shot at it. It takes time and you have to respect it. You have to know the crowd; you have to know your locations. You can’t do the same thing all the time for every room you’re playing. What I might play at Greenhouse in NYC could be very different from what I play in Vegas at Tao. It’s that attention to it that will make you successful if you want it…

FREE Mag: Give us a clue of some tracks that you’re spinning right now and what are you looking at in the future?

DJ Vice: okay, that’s tough because there is so much music out there. Right now I am feeling David Guetta “Toyfriend”, Javi Mula “Come On” and two tracks by La Roux “Bullet Proof” & “In for the Kill”. That’s what’s really exciting to me is finding new music and playing it for people and seeing how they respond to it and feeding off their energy. For the rest of the year I am booked…playing clubs and parties so a lot of traveling…it’s really busy but it’s great. Like I always tell people this is not a job it’s what I love to do. As long as that remains the case I’ll always do it and see where it takes me.
